Carnaross Gaelic Football Club County Meath Ireland

Jack Smith - RIP

JACK SMITH – RIP

It was with great sadness that we lost one of our most dedicated club members, our President Jack Smith, on Thursday 31st March 2016.

Jack, one of the most dedicated members of Carnaross GFC was a player, an official, and a passionate supporter of every club activity.

A renowned wing back, Jack started playing in 1945 with the Loughan minors and was on the Meath minor panel in 1946.

He went on to captain Carnaross to a Junior title in 1955 and an Intermediate title two years later in 1957, alongside his brother Tommy. His talent extended to the county scene and he played a prominent role when Meath won the All-Ireland Junior title in 1952.

After his playing days, he was an ever present in club activities until recent years and a Carnaross team without Jack on the sideline was a rare sight. Jack attended his first Carnaross AGM in 1945 and never missed one for the following 66 years. From 1970 to 1983 Jack served as chairman but his role also extended to secretary and treasurer. Along with the jerseys, he used to bring a bag of boots to games for anybody who didn’t have a pair.

His consistent attendance at matches and deep rooted knowledge of the game was second to none. An expert on team selection, his sound advice was passed on to various mentors over the decades and he was a selector when Carnaross repeated the Junior and Intermediate double in 1991 and 1993.

When the club celebrated it’s 125th Anniversary in 2013, Jack’s lifetime of outstanding service was honoured with the unveiling of a plaque, a fitting tribute to the man who was described as “Mr Carnaross” by the great Matt Gilsenan. He was also the recipient of a Sean Gael award from Meath County Board in 2000.

As a club we extend our deepest sympathy to his son Tommy and daughter in law Susan, Brother Tommy, grandson Nathan, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
