Carnaross 2-7 Oldcastle 1-10

A League (Division 2)

Played in Carnaross – 12/2/2010

Carnaross played host to Oldcastle in the first League game played in Meath, and following a tough encounter an equalizing point for Carnaross from Damian Smith in stoppage time meant both sides had to share the points.

Carnaross formed a guard of honor for last year’s Intermediate Champions.  A minutes silence was also observed before the game for Maureen Ward, an Honorary President of Carnaross GFC who passed away during the week.

Oldcastle opened the scoring with an early point from play.  This was cancelled out when John L McGee converted a free for Carnaross.  McGee then grabbed the first goal of the game to give the home side a three point lead.  Oldcastle responded with two points before another free from McGee left Carnaross two up after fifteen minutes.  A free from Oldcastle kept the pressure on but when Ollie Murphy found John L McGee with a long pass he made no mistake from close range to grab his second goal.  A point from Dermot McGee stretched the lead further.  Two points late in the half for Oldcastle left three between the teams at the break, 2-3 to 0-6.

Damian Smith scored a point from play early in the second-half for Carnaross before Oldcastle responded with a point soon afterwards.  The next score left the teams level once again following a long ball into the area.  A mistake in the Carnaross defence resulted in the ball crossing the line for an Oldcastle goal.  Another John L McGee free put Carnaross in front again, but Oldcaslte hit back strongly, scoring three unanswered points going into the closing stages.  Carnaross refused to accept defeat as they laid siege on the Oldcastle goals for the remainder of the game.  They were unlucky not to hit the net as the Oldcastle keeper scrambled a close effort away.  Dermot McGee hit a point from play to leave one between the sides with time running out.  The pressure finally paid off when Damian Smith landed the late equalizer.  Oldcastle had one more chance to win the game but their pointed effort went wide.

Carnaross opened the scoring in the first minute with a point from John L McGee, but by the time Dermot McGee added the second just before the break, O’Mahonys had hit 1-10 without reply.

Once again Carnaross hit the first score of the second-half when John L McGee won a high ball and finished into an empty net.  O’Mahonys responded with the next three points before McGee got his second goal after being put through by Charles Brogan.  This left seven between the teams but the rest of the game belonged to the Navan side as they ran out comfortable winners.

Rathkenny 2-12 Carnaross 2-8

A League (Division 2)

Played in Rathkenny – 21/3/2010

A strong first-half performance from Rathkenny, including two early goals, set them up for a victory over Carnaross.

It was Carnaross who hit the front first with two early points from play from Ollie Murphy and John L McGee.  Rathkenny opened their account with a free before going on to score the game’s first goal. There was some confusion over this goal as the linesman appeared to signal that the ball went out of play, but following some discussion the referee let the goal stand.  Rathkenny extended their lead with two points from play but Carnaross responded well with two points of their own, both from John L McGee.  Rathkenny then got the second goal following uncertainty in the Carnaross defence.  The home side went on to stretch their lead further before the break adding four points.  John L McGee got the last Carnaross score of the half through a free to leave them trailing 2-7 to 0-5.

Daniel Reilly gave Carnaross the opening score after the break but Rathkenny enjoyed a dominant spell scoring four unanswered points and seemed to be cruising to victory.  A free kick from John L McGee led to Carnaross upping their game and soon afterwards Ollie Murphy fielded a high ball and picked out Dermot McGee who struck to the net with about ten minutes remaining.  Rathkenny then had county player Brian Meade dismissed after being shown a straight red.  John L McGee then added a free before he scored another goal for Carnaross to leave four between the sides.  It was however too late to add to it as Rathkenny held onto their lead.

Carnaross 0-9 St. Patricks 1-12

A League (Division 2)

Played in Carnaross – 13/5/2010

Two games in three days proved to be too much for Carnaross as they went down to St. Patricks, two nights after playing extra-time against Trim in the Feis Cup.  Despite this they were still well in the game before the visitors pulled clear in the closing stages.

The opening half was a tight affair with the sides level on four occasions.  Daniel Reilly gave Carnaross an early lead but the Pats levelled soon afterwards.  A point from Dermot McGee and two from John L McGee gave Carnaross a one point lead on three occasions, but each time St Patricks managed to equalise.  The visitors then took the lead for the first time and another point before the break gave them a 0-6 to 0-4 lead.

Damian Smith opened the second half scoring but once again St. Patricks responded.  Two points from play in quick succession from Dermot McGee left it all square again.  After 15 minutes St. Patricks scored the game’s only goal which turned out to be a crucial score giving them a three point lead. Smith once again converted for Carnaross before Niall McDonnell finished off a good move with Ollie Murphy but the Pats yet again cancelled out these scores with two frees.  As the game entered the closing stages Carnaross went in search of the goal they needed but as the clock went into added time St. Patricks added three more points from play to see off a tired but determined Carnaross performance.

Dunderry 2-14 Carnaross 1-6

A League (Division 2)

Played in Dunderry – 22/5/2010

Carnaross are still searching for their first league win following a disappointing performance against unbeaten Dunderry.

Right from the start Dunderry raced into an early lead and after twenty minutes led by four points to one with Charles Brogan scoring for Carnaross.  Carnaross were unlucky not to have a goal after John L McGee was denied by the Dunderry keeper.  McGee converted a free but the home side responded with a goal after an attempted free came back off the post and was not dealt with by the defence. Carnaross immediately had the chance to cancel out the Dunderry goal but McGee was once again denied after his shot rattled back off the crossbar.  Just before the break Dunderry scored a second goal to stretch their lead further to lead 2-4 to 0-2.

Carnaross had the better of the first ten minutes of the second half outscoring the hosts 0-3 to 0-2 with John L McGee hitting all three of the Carnaross scores.  This left seven points between the sides and Carnaross struggled to get any closer for the remainder of the game.  McGee converted a penalty with ten minutes remaining but that was as good as it got as Dunderry added on six more points before the final whistle to finish convincing eleven point winners.

Carnaross 0-9 Cortown 0-8

A League (Division 2)

Played in Carnaross – 23/6/2010

Carnaross finally picked up their first league win at the sixth attempt following a hard fought one point victory over neighbours Cortown.

A shower of rain before the throw-in resulted in slippery conditions for both sides to contend with. John L McGee opened the scoring after two minutes.  A second McGee free and a point from play from Dermot McGee gave Carnaross a three point lead after ten minutes.  Cortown opened their account with a point from play but Carnaross responded once again with a free from McGee.  The final ten minutes were dominated by the Cortown men as they hit four points without reply to take a 0-5 to 0-4 lead at the break.

Carnaross began the second half positively with three points from John L McGee. Cortown reduced the margin with a point from play before both sides went a long period without a score. During this time Carnaross were lucky not to concede a goal after a rebound off a post was blasted wide when a Cortown goal looked a certainty.  Niall McDonnell added a point from play for Carnaross before John L McGee put them three clear with normal time up.  However, five minutes of added time resulted in Cortown finishing strongly with two points from play but Carnaross managed to hold on for a one point victory.

Carnaross 0-5 St. Michaels 0-5

A League (Division 2)

Played in Carnaross – 6/7/2010

There was no separating neighbours Carnaross and St. Michaels who shared the points in the A League for the second year running following a tough low-scoring battle in windy conditions.

St. Michaels played with the strong wind in the opening half and they hit the ground running with two points from play in the opening minute.  Carnaross hit back with a free from John L McGee and could have been further in front but had a goal disallowed for a square ball and an effort from Damian Smith was well saved by the St Michaels ‘keeper.  After twenty minutes John L McGee was also to be denied by the St. Michaels ‘keeper before Damian Smith levelled matters with a point from play, leaving it 0-2 each at half-time.

Both sides traded two points each in the opening ten minutes of the second half with Niall McDonnell and John L McGee hitting the target for Carnaross.  Neither side managed to score for the next fifteen minutes but Carnaross were guilty of hitting a number of wides with the wind behind them.  With five minutes remaining, Ollie Murphy took a short sideline to Dermot McGee who finished off a good run with a well taken point.  St. Michaels got the last score of the game to leave the sides level. However, Carnaross had the chance to win the game but once again the St Michaels ‘keeper kept them at bay, this time denying Niall McDonnell from close range.

St. Ultans 1-8 Carnaross 0-9

A League (Division 2)

Played in Sean Newman Park – 23/7/2010

Carnaross will consider themselves very unlucky not to have got something from this game against St. Ultans as a goal on the stroke of half-time for the senior side proved to be the decisive score.

The home side opened the scoring but Ciaran McDonnell had the sides level with the next attack. Two more points from St. Ultans gave them a 0-3 to 0-1 lead after ten minutes.  John L McGee then added another for Carnaross from a tight angle but this was cancelled out by an Ultans free. Niall McDonnell then left one between the teams with a well taken point from play as Carnaross kept in touch. St. Ultans were to extend their lead further however when they took a quick free which was finished to the net with the last action of the half, leaving them 1-4 to 0-3 in front.

St. Ultans hit the first two scores of the second half and suddenly were six points ahead.  However Carnaross responded well and points from Patrick Nugent, Dermot and John L McGee brought them right back into contention. A free from St. Ultans put four between them again but Carnaross were now getting a firm grip on the game and a free from Patrick Nugent and a point from play from Dermot McGee reduced the deficit further. Going into the last ten minutes there was only three points in it but Carnaross could only manage one more point from Patrick Nugent and were left to rue missed chances as the home side held on for a two point win.

Carnaross 1-10 Syddan 2-11

A League (Division 2)

Played in Carnaross – 11/9/2010

Carnaross remain rooted to the bottom of the AFL Division 2 table after a ten point half-time deficit proved too much to claw back in the second-half.

Syddan were by far the better team in the first-half and after ten minutes had a 1-2 to 0-2 lead, with Dermot McGee and Ollie Murphy hitting the target for Carnaross. The visitors went on to add a further 1-4 without reply before Murphy added his second point. Another point for Syddan gave them a 2-7 to 0-3 lead at the break.

Carnaross improved after the resumption and two early points from John L McGee and Ollie Murphy gave them the perfect start. John L McGee then converted a penalty to leave five between the teams. However, Syddan cancelled out the goal with three points in a row. Carnaross went on to dominate the remainder of the game and points from Niall McDonnell, Dermot McGee and John L McGee (2) left four in it with time almost up. A point each in injury time finished the scoring.

Carnaross: Cillian Comaskey; Peter Nugent, Thomas Nugent, Eamonn Comaskey; Charles Brogan, Patrick Nugent, Stephen Flattery; Dermot McGee (0-2), Richard Mulvey; Niall McDonnell (0-1), John L McGee (1-4), Peter Mullan; Gavin Murphy, Ollie Murphy (0-3), Daniel Reilly; Subs: Ian Donoghue for Peter Nugent; Ciaran McDonnell for Daniel Reilly;

Carnaross stretched their lead further early in the second half with points from Ollie Murphy, Gavin Murphy and Niall McDonnell. Carnaross 1-9 St. Colmcilles 1-10

A League (Division 2)

Played in Carnaross – 21/10/2010

Carnaross failed to avoid the Division 2 trapdoor after St. Colmcilles secured safety following an entertaining game with all the scores coming from play bar one free for each side.

Carnaross could not have hoped for a better start with three points in the opening five minutes from John L McGee (2) and Dermot McGee. They increased their lead further with points from Brian Comaskey and Stein Carpenter to lead by five. However, St Colmcilles battled back and six unanswered points gave them a 0-6 to 0-5 lead at half-time.

The start to the second-half was identical to the first with Carnaross dominating the early stages. Niall McDonnell scored a point before John L McGee jumped highest to direct the ball past the keeper and into the net. Declan Reilly and John L McGee increased the lead further and Carnaross had a five point lead for the second time in the game. As in the first-half, St. Colmcilles responded strongly and two points reduced the margin before a long ball into the area was not dealt with and resulted in a goal which left the teams level with ten minutes remaining. Declan Reilly put Carnaross in front once again, but two points from St. Colmcilles gave them the edge with time running out. Carnaross were unable to convert any of the chances which came their way and it was St. Colmcilles who avoided relegation.
