Carnaross 0-12 Clann na nGael 2-6

B League (Division 4)

Played in Carnaross – 3/3/2014

A free from Clann na nGael with the last kick of the ball resulted in a share of the points with Carnaross in the opening game of the B League.

Carnaross opened up an early lead within five minutes with a point apiece from Paul Donoghue and Dean Connell. Clann na nGael then got a lucky break on their first attack when a high ball was misjudged by Shane McNiffe in the Carnaross goal and ended up in the net. However, Carnaross continued to dominate the remainder of the half and went on to add four more points from Paul Donoghue (2), John Carpenter and Shane Casserly. With two minutes remaining Clann na nGael pointed twice but these scores were cancelled out as Dean Connell and Shane Casserly hit the target in added time to leave Carnaross leading 0-8 to 1-2 at half-time.

Shane Casserly extended the Carnaross lead to four points just after the restart. Clann na nGael reduced the deficit with a free and things got better for the Athboy side when they were awarded a penalty. The spot kick resulted in a goal to leave the sides level with twenty minutes to go. John Carpenter pointed for Carnaross but Clann na nGael replied a minute later. A point each from Brian Comaskey and John Carpenter edged Carnaross two in front with fifteen minutes to play. However, this proved to be the last score for Carnaross who could have been trailing but for a super point blank save from Shane McNiffe with five minutes remaining. Clann na nGael reduced the margin and their persistence paid off when they converted a late free in injury time.

B League (Division 4)

Played in Dunshaughlin – 9/3/2014

A poor start to the second-half proved costly for Carnaross and they were duly punished by Dunshaughlin.

A point apiece from Paul Donoghue and John Carpenter gave Carnaross an early lead inside the opening two minutes but Dunshaughlin responded with two points to level matters midway through the half. Points from Dean Connell and Shane Casserly edged Carnaross in front but once again the home side hit back to level the game for a second time. Carnaross finished the half positively and points from Dean Connell and Paul Donoghue left them leading 0-6 to 0-4 at the interval.

When the game resumed, Carnaross pointed with their first attack to leave them three in front. However, Carnaross then switched off and the home side took full advantage going on to score 2-6 without reply to put the game beyond Carnaross with ten minutes remaining. Carnaross did get their act together in the remaining ten minutes and outscored Dunshaughlin 0-6 to 0-2 before the final whistle.
