Junior D Championship – Round 3

Played in Kilmessan – 7/7/2016

After receiving two walkovers in the earlier rounds, Carnaross finally got some on pitch action but suffered a seven point defeat to table toppers St. Peter’s Dunboyne.

Amazingly after three rounds this was only the second game to take place in a group littered with walkovers and the lack of match practice for both sides was evident early on. It was St. Peter’s who had most of the early chances but couldn’t hit the target with six wides in a row, while Carnaross missed two goal chances at the opposite end. Carnaross hit the front with two frees from Dean Connell but the Dunboyne men finally found the target in the twentieth minute with the game’s opening goal. A minute later they double their tally when they found the net for a second time and a point before half-time gave them a 2-1 to 0-2 lead.

After the restart the early stages were evenly matched as both sides exchanged three points each with Dean Connell accounting for all three of the Carnaross scores. Carnaross emptied the bench for the second-half which gave the average age of the team a significant boost. However, St. Peter’s kept their distance and went on to extend their lead to ten points with three points in the last ten minutes. Carnaross got a late goal from Pierce Fleming following a goalmouth scramble which brought the scoring to an end. Carnaross now face Slane for a quarter-final spot in the final group game.

Junior D Championship – Quarter-Final

Played in Kilmainhamwood – 7/8/2016

Carnaross bowed out of the Junior D championship when they went down to Moynalty in a close and exciting game in Kilmainhamwood.

Moynalty got some early scores against the wind and after 15 minutes lead by 4 points. However Carnaross finished the half strongly and following a goal from Dillon Fox and a quick point from Matthew O’Reilly they went in level at half time, 1-1 to 0-4.

Dillon Fox got an early point for Carnaross in the second half but Moynalty struck back with a goal and a couple of points to lead by 4 points after 15 minutes. However Carnaross never gave up and following points from Dean Connell and Peter Mullan they trailed by two points with 10 minutes to go. Moynalty got another point to go three up again but substitute Oliver Farrelly scored a point for Carnaross to leave two points between them again. With 5 minutes to go, Oliver Murphy switched from the goals to full forward to try and snatch a late goal. However Moynalty held out and scored the last point to seal the win.
