Junior FC: Carnaross 0-12 St. Brigids 1-5

Carnaross secured a place in the Quarter Final place after a hard hitting, honest and tense encounter with St Brigids in the immaculately presented Ballinlough pitch under lights.

Junior Championship (Round 3)
Played in Ballinlough– 10/9/2021

Carnaross started off the stronger of the two teams with Paddy McDermott opening up proceedings. St. Brigid’s replied before Carnaross began to dominate the middle third. Unfortunately this control wasn’t evidenced on the scoreboard as they kicked 3 short into the keeper’s hands and 3 wides. Brigid’s took solace from this wayward shooting and began to counter attack which allowed them to tap over 2 frees.

The robust defending of the Carnaross defenders and a monster shoulder from Cormac O’Reilly ensured any goal chances were nipped at the bud. Frank O’Reilly eventually found his shooting boots knocking over a free and an offensive mark before Paddy McDermott completed the first half scoring to bring the teams level at the turn of ends. Carnaross were left frustrated at half time as they had carved out no advantage from their large volume of possession and scoring opportunities.

The second half began well with the Ross registering the first score with Frank splitting the posts. This was to be a false dawn, however, as Brigid’s found the back of the net after a loose ball was pulled on from the 14 yard line. Instead of inspiring the Ballinacree men though, this put the fire up the Hoops who went on to register 7 of the last 8 scores. James O’Connor excelled all night and lead by example by converting a point after a direct run at their defence.

Paddy McDermott converted from distance to bring the sides level and bring his tally to 3 for the night. At this stage the Ross defenders won turnover after turnover as the brave Brigid’s players began to wane. Frank converted 2 frees after Niall McDonnell had won primary possession but was fouled. Dillon Fox caught some great marks around the middle third to lay a platform for Frank O’Reilly to kick another two points from play. Brigid’s searched in vain for a goal but the Carnaross rear guard held firm to ensure them a quarter final berth against either St. Vincent’s or Castletown.
