Tailteann Cup: Carnaross 0-8 St Vincents 1-10

St. Vincent’s made the long journey to North Meath worthwhile with a well-worked victory over hosts Carnaross.

Tailteann Cup (Round 5)
Played in Carnaross – 7/7/2021

St. Vincent’s exploded out of the blocks registering 5 of the first 6 scores of the game. It was this decisive first 10 minutes that separated the two teams for the remainder of the game. Paddy McDermott kept The Ross alive with two well-taken points despite heavy pressure from the Ardcath men.
St. Vincent’s responded with another purple patch which yielded 1-2. The game could have been wrapped up before half time, were it not for a smart save by Shane McNiffe in the goals for the Hoops.

Carnaross finished the half strongly with Cian McGlynn and Cian O’Reilly asserting themselves in the middle third. Niall McDonnell continued in his rich vein of form adding two scores from play that kept the home side ticking over.

The intensity of the match increased in the second half as Carnaross’ defence stood firm to limit their opponents to 3 points. They were ably marshalled by captain for the night, James O’Connor, who broke up various attacks and spearheaded numerous moves going forward for his own team.

Tomás Plunkett won a mountain of dirty ball and relished the physical battle that St. Vincent’s always provide. Paddy McDermott kicked a fine solo effort, beating 3 defenders and the North Meath men’s tails were up. Vincent’s dropped numbers back to stem the tide but couldn’t stop Darragh O’Reilly, who converted a free after he himself was fouled. Niall McDonnell kicked a wonderful score from distance as the margin reduced to 4. Vincent’s looked to counter attack but struggled to find much joy.

Carnaross spurned a number of scoring opportunities due to a combination of an abundance of Vincent’s defenders and their own tiredness. Paddy McDermott added another point and was unlucky to see a goal bound effort ricochet off the rear end of a Vincent’s defender for a 45. The Ross searched unsuccessfully for a goal but Vincent’s were content to see out the remainder of the game by maintaining possession.
