Carnaross 2-8 Seneschalstown 1-9

Feis Cup, Round 1

Played in Carnaross – 22/5/2011

Carnaross produced the perfect response to their disappointing Championship defeat a week earlier with a fully deserved victory over senior side Seneschalstown.

Right from the start Carnaross were positive and determined and John L McGee opened the scoring with a converted free in the first minute. It got better two minutes later when Niall McDonnell’s ’45 attempt dropped short and was fumbled by a Seneschalstown defender, and as three Carnaross forwards pounced it was Declan Reilly who got the final touch to the net. Another free from McGee stretched the home sides lead to five points before Seneschalstown replied with two points in succession. Carnaross once again went five in front with two more points from John L McGee. Seneschalstown got closer before the break with three points in a row to leave the half time score 1-4 to 0-5 in favour of Carnaross.

After the restart John L McGee got the first point from a free but this was cancelled out with Seneschalstown converting a ’45. McGee once again put three between the sides but this lead was wiped out when Seneschalstown found the net to leave the sides level on 1-6 each with twenty minutes remaining. Carnaross hit the front again with two frees from McGee but Seneschalstown hit back with two of their own. Going into the closing stages both sides exchanged a point each which kept the teams level and extra time looking possible. However, Carnaross sealed the win when John L McGee put Damian Smith through and he made no mistake firing low past the keeper with three minutes remaining. Seneschalstown added another point but this proved to be the last score as the home side held on to record a well deserved win.

Carnaross 1-11 Longwood 1-13

Feis Cup, Round 2

Played in Longwood – 21/6/2011

Carnaross made the long trip to Longwood and despite trailing for the entire game were unlucky not to snatch a win after missing a goal chance in the last minute.

Both sides produced an entertaining game despite the wet conditions. It was the home side who started best and had three points on the board in as many minutes. They doubled their lead soon after with the game’s opening goal. John L McGee finally got Carnaross off the mark with a well taken point from play but it was cancelled out by a Longwood free. Peter Mullan and John L McGee reduced the deficit with a point each but once again Longwood responded strongly with two more points to restore their six point cushion. Carnaross fought their way back into the game before the break and points from John L McGee (2) and Declan Reilly put them within three points. Another Longwood point brought the first-half to an end and gave them a 1-7 to 0-6 lead.

Longwood increased their lead after the restart with a point from play. However, one minute later Carnaross had the ball in the net after Shane Casserly picked up a breaking ball and calmly slotted his shot past the keeper to leave two points in it. Both sides traded points with John L McGee hitting the target for Carnaross before Longwood increased their lead to four with two more points in a row. Carnaross fought hard to get back in contention and began to dominate the last ten minutes. John L McGee added two frees before Longwood hit back with a free of their own. Two more points from Dermot and John L McGee left only one in it with two minutes remaining. Another point for Longwood meant Carnaross had to go in search of a goal. Their chance came in the last few seconds of the game when Dermot McGee found himself through but he was denied by the Longwood keeper who also did well to clear the rebound before the final whistle.
