Carnaross 1-8 St. Brigids 2-10

Junior D Championship

Played in Moylagh – 19/4/2014

Carnaross and St. Brigids played out a close game in the Moylagh sunshine with the Ballinacree men pulling away late on to claim the points.

St. Brigids made an early impact and quickly had three points on the board inside the first ten minutes. However, Carnaross responded well and levelled matters by the midway stage of the half with three points in a row, all from the boot of Paul Donoaghue. St. Brigids edged in front once more by a point but Carnaross hit back to take the lead for the first time with a point apiece from Michael Brogan and Paul Donoghue. This lead didn’t last long as St. Brigids replied with the game’s opening goal moments later. Colm McDonagh kicked the final point of the first-half to leave Carnaross trailing 1-4 to 0-7 at the break.

St. Brigids extended their lead to two points after the restart but Carnaross went on to take the lead after a quick free from Ollie Murphy found Dean Connell in space and he finished to the net from close range to give Carnaross a one point advantage. Both sides exchanged a point each with Paul Donoghue hitting the target for Carnaross. St. Brigids went on to hit 1-2 without reply to take a four point lead with time running out. Barry O’Connor reduced the margin to three points and Carnaross then had the chance to level matters with five minutes remaining. Dean Connell found the net for a second time but the referee decided to award a penalty rather than give advantage, and Ollie Murphy’s spotkick went the wrong side of the post. St. Brigids took advantage of this let-off adding two more points before the final whistle sounded.

Carnaross 2-4 Longwood 3-13

Junior D Championship

Played in Athboy – 21/6/2014

Carnaross were on the wrong end of a twelve point defeat to Longwood in the summer sunshine in Athboy.

Carnaross got off to the perfect start when John Plunkett found the net for the game’s opening score, but Longwood settled quickly and soon had the sides level with three points in a row. Carnaross failed to capatalise on the good start and went on to add only one more point from John Plunkett before the half-time whistle, while Longwood dominated proceedings to lead 2-8 to 1-1 at the interval.

Carnaross were much improved after the restart and points from Ollie Murphy and Tadgh Skelly reduced the margin. When Cian Yore found the net Carnaross found themselves trailing by five points midway through the half. However, Longwood upped their game once again to deny a Carnaross comeback. Carnaross could have been closer but for some wayward shooting in front of goal when the chances arrived. Tadgh Skelly finished the scoring with a clinical finish from an acute angle but Longwood ran out comfortable winners in the end.
