Carnaross made a winning start to their A League campaign with a comfortable victory over St. Mary’s in a bitterly cold Donore.
The game was delayed slightly as the floodlights struggled to warm up and when the action finally got underway it was St. Mary’s who got the early chances aided by the strong breeze. However, they failed to capitalise with three early wides and they were punished when Dermot McGee pointed twice for Carnaross from their first two opportunities. This boosted Carnaross and they went on to dominate proceedings by adding three more points from Pierce Fleming, Dermot McGee and Patrick Nugent. Their lead was extended further when Paul Donoguhe got the opening goal to give his side an eight point lead after 25 minutes. St. Mary’s opened their account with a point from play and double their tally with a late free, leaving Carnaross 1-5 to 0-2 in front at the break.
Carnaross played with the wind in the second-half and they took full advantage hitting four early points from Patrick Nugent, Paul Donoghue, Pierce Fleming and a ’45 from Cillian Comaskey in the first five minutes. Patrick Nugent extended their lead further when his shot found the net despite the best efforts of the St. Mary’s keeper to give Carnaross a thirteen point lead with twenty minutes remaining. However, the scores dried up for the remainder of the game and the next score was a goal from St. Mary’s with ten minutes on the clock. Carnaross introduced Frank O’Reilly for his debut and he chipped in with two late points before the final whistle brought proceeding to an end.

Both Carnaross and Dunderry remain unbeaten after sharing the points in the second round of the A League.
This match was a tight encounter throughout with never more than two points between the sides. Both sides exchanged two points apiece in the opening ten minutes with the McGee brothers, Dermot and John L, landing a point each for Carnaross. Dunderry edged in front with a converted free but Patrick Nugent levelled matters once again with a point from play. Carnaross finished the half stronger and two points from John L McGee left his side in front 0-5 to 0-3 at half-time.
The two point lead was quickly wiped out after the restart when Dunderry kicked two quickfire points within the opening minute of the second half to leave the sides level once more. Carnaross restored their two point advantage with two well struck 45’s from the boot of Cillian Comaskey. Dunderry fought back once more and two points left the game level on 0-7 each with ten minutes remaining. A Dunderry point gave them the advantage going into the closing stages but a late point from Dermot McGee ensured a share of the spoils.

Carnaross kept their unbeaten start to the A League intact with a four point victory over St Brigids.
A heavy snow shower half an hour before throw in put the game in some doubt but when two referees turned up to officiate, both of them passed the pitch playable. When the action did get underway Carnaross made a flying start with John L McGee pointing twice in the opening two minutes. Things improved for the home side when Dermot McGee found the net eight minutes in. St. Brigids opened their account with a point after twelve minutes but Carnaross continued to dominate the first-half and added three more points from Dermot McGee, Cillian Comaskey and Paul Donoghue to lead by 1-5 to 0-1 at the break. Carnaross should have been further in front but were guilty of kicking nine wides in the opening period.
After the restart it was St. Brigids who made the better start and hit two early points to reduce the margin to five. Carnaross responded well and Patrick Nugent scored their second goal which was quickly followed up by a point each from Paul Donoghue and Nugent again to take a ten point lead with twenty minutes remaining. However, this proved to be the final score for the home side as St Brigids hit back with 1-3 as they piled the pressure on Carnaross. To their credit, the Carnaross defence stood strong and held on for a hard earned victory in tough conditions.

A first-half penalty miss by Carnaross proved to be the difference as Carnaross lost their unbeaten record in the A League with a two point defeat away to Meath Hill.
Meath Hill playing with a strong breeze opened the scoring with an early point. John L McGee was then hauled down in the penalty area and the resulting penalty which was taken by Charles Brogan was well saved by the Meath Hill goalkeeper. John L McGee added two points to put Carnaross into an early lead but Meath Hill responded with three points in a row. Dermot McGee and Frank O'Reilly added points for Carnaross but Meath Hill finished the half with two points to leave the half-time score, Meath Hill 0-6, Carnaross 0-5.
After the restart it was Meath Hill who made the better start and hit four points in the first 15 minutes to increase the margin to five before John L McGee responded with a point for Carnaross. Meath Hill got the next score which also happened to be their last as Carnaross responded well and finished strongly with points from John L McGee, Peter Mullan and Cillian Comaskey. However time ran out for Carnaross as Meath Hill finished two point winners.

Carnaross got back to winning ways in the A League with a two point victory over Longwood in a rain soaked encounter.
Shane Casserly got the game’s first score when he pointed in the sixth minute but Longwood replied immediately with a converted free. John L McGee put Carnaross in front once more but another point from Longwood left the sides level on 0-2 each after twenty minutes as both sides struggled with the slippery conditions. However, the scoring improved in the last ten minutes of the half as both sides traded three points each with the Carnaross scores coming from Shane Casserly, John L McGee and a ’45 from Dermot McGee to leave the sides level on 0-5 each at half-time.
After the restart Longwood hit the front for the first time with a free, but Carnaross hit back with two of their own from John L McGee and could have been further ahead but Pierce Fleming’s shot on goal went the wrong side of the post. Longwood then enjoyed a period of dominance and added four points to take the lead once more and they were also unlucky not to have a goal when an attempt came back off the post. However, the next score was a goal which came from the penalty spot after John L McGee calmly sent the keeper the wrong way to put Carnaross back in front. Another free from McGee put Carnaross two up with ten minutes remaining but Longwood hit back with two points to leave it all square once again. Carnaross found that little bit extra in the closing stages and registered two more points from McGee and Pierce Fleming. However, the result was still in the balance right up to the last kick of the ball when a close range free for Longwood crashed off the crossbar much to the relief of Carnaross.

Carnaross left Drumconrath with two valuable A League points when they had four to spare at the end of a tough encounter.
It was Carnaross who dominated the opening period and had three points on the board after just five minutes thanks to two converted frees from John L McGee and a Patrick Nugent point from play. Two more excellent John L McGee points from play edged the visitors further in front before Drumconrath opened their account after twenty minutes. Dermot McGee restored the five point advantage for Carnaross a minute later and both sides exchanged a point each before the break with John L McGee hitting the target for Carnaross to leave them 0-7 to 0-2 ahead.
The opening exchanges of the second-half were very tight and this was reflected on the scoreboard. When Drumconrath finally opened the scoring after eleven minutes they had been reduced to fourteen following the dismissal of their full-forward. Cillian Comaskey pointed for Carnaross but the home side hit back strong and hit three points without reply to reduce the margin to just two points. Carnaross had Thomas Nugent dismissed for a second yellow but they remained composed and three points in a two minute spell from John L McGee, Cillian Comaskey and Charles Brogan put the result beyond doubt before Drumconrath added a point deep in injury time.

Carnaross suffered their second defeat of the A League when visitors Bective ran out six point winners.
The previous week Bective enjoyed an emphatic victory scoring 5-17 over Moylagh at the same venue and they hit the ground running in this encounter when they had 1-4 on the board after just nine minutes. However, Carnaross were only three points behind as they also registered 1-1 during this period with Dermot McGee finding the net and Charles Brogan pointing from play. Carnaross reduced the margin to the minimum with points from John L McGee, but Bective struck their second goal after fifteen minutes. The end to end action continued with McGee pointing for Carnaross before Bective hit back with two more. Cillian Comaskey pounced on a loose ball to get a second goal for Carnaross which was added to by another John L McGee point but Bective registered two more late points to lead 2-8 to 2-5 after an action packed first-half.
Bective extended their lead to five with two early points but the remainder of the half was evenly contested and both sides exchanged four points each with John L McGee getting all four of the Carnaross scores. However, Carnaross couldn’t reduce the margin any further as Bective maintained their four point advantage throughout and when they added two more points late in the game it secured victory as Carnaross failed to generate the goal chance they needed to get a result.

Carnaross bounced back from a disappointing defeat to Bective just three days earlier to come home from Syddan with a crucial victory which puts them right back into contention for promotion.
With both sides level on points before throw-in a win was vital, and as the game panned out there was very little between the sides from start to finish. Carnaross took the early advantage when Cian O’Reilly finished a fine move with a point from play straight from the throw in. The home side settled quickly and two points in a row edged them in front before Shane Casserly levelled matters after eight minutes. Both sides exchanged two points each with Charles Brogan and John L McGee getting the Carnaross scores. Syddan took the lead with ten minutes remaining but Carnaross dominated the remainder of the half and this was reflected on the scoreboard as they kicked four points in a row from Dermot McGee, John L McGee (2) and Peter Carpenter to take a 0-8 to 0-5 half-time lead.
When play resumed their three point lead was quickly wiped out as Syddan landed three frees in the opening seven minutes. With the game all square, there was nothing between the sides as they both fought hard for every ball but Carnaross refused to let the home side take the lead. Carnaross twice took the lead with points from John L McGee and Dermot McGee but on both occasions Syddan hit back. It was all square on 0-10 each with ten minutes but Carnaross upped their game and three points from the McGee brothers and Charles Brogan gave them a three point advantage with time almost up. Syddan landed the final score of the game as Carnaross ran out two point winners after an impressive battling performance where all but one of their scores came from play.

A disappointing first-half left Carnaross with too much of a deficit to overcome after the break against league leaders Ballinabrackey.
The men from Ballinabrackey completely dominated the opening period and they took an early lead with four points in a row inside the first ten minutes. Dermot McGee pointed twice to leave the margin at two points midway through but Ballinabrackey continued their ambush on the Carnaross goal by scoring six more points before the break. They could have been further ahead but they kicked eight wides and Shane McNiffe pulled off two fine saves in the Carnaross goal to leave the half-time score 0-10 to 0-2 in favour of Ballinabrackey.
Carnaross got the first score after the restart from John L McGee but once again they had Shane McNiffe to thank at the other end with another save to keep Ballinabrackey out. Both sides exchanged two points each with Patrick Nugent and John L McGee getting the Carnaross scores. Stephen Dawson and Patrick Nugent pointed again to leave five points between the sides with fifteen minutes remaining as Carnaross took control of proceedings. However, they failed to reduce the margin any further as neither side scored for the next ten minutes but Carnaross were guilty of missing several chances which came their way. Ballinabrackey added two late points before Dermot McGee completed the scoring with a late free for Carnaross. After a disappointing result, one positive for Carnaross was the return of Niall McDonnell to action as a sub following his recent cruciate injury.

Carnaross kept their promotion hopes alive with a hard earned three-point victory over Clann na nGael in a sunny Athboy.
Carnaross welcomed back Niall McDonnell and Liam Brogan to the starting line up for the first time this year following long injury lay-offs and both players had a big impact on the game. Clann na nGael had the evergreen Graham Geraghty lined out at full forward and he caused plenty of problems for the Carnaross defence. Clann na nGael landed a point in the opening minute but Carnaross went in front two minutes later when John L McGee found the net. Clann na nGael had a goal chance moments later but were denied by a timely block by Ian Donoghue. Three points in a row from Clann na nGael levelled matters at the midway stage but Carnaross took the lead once more when John L McGee went through for his second goal. However, this goal was cancelled out when Clann na nGael scored their first goal a minute later. Both sides scored a point each with Cillian Comaskey registering for Carnaross. Clann na nGael then got their second goal but Carnaross finished the half positively and points from Niall McDonnell (2) and John L McGee left the sides level at half-time with 2-5 apiece.
The home side made a bright start to the second-half with two points in the opening two minutes. John L McGee hit back for Carnaross before Clann na nGael scored their third and final score in the seventh minute. A Stephen Dawson point reduced the margin to just one point and Carnaross could have went in front but Niall McDonnell was very unlucky to see his goal attempt crash off the post and out to safety. However, Carnaross didn’t have to wait long to get back in front when two points from John L McGee edged them one point in front with ten minutes remaining. The remainder of the game was very tense as both sides battled hard for the victory but the Carnaross defence held strong in the final minutes and were rewarded when John L McGee converted two free late on to secure a three point victory for his side.

The A League campaign came to a disappointing conclusion for Carnaross as a strong second-half performance from Kilmainham resulted in a heavy defeat.
Despite the wide margin in the final result, there was only a point between the sides after a very competitive first-half. Kilmainham opened the scoring with a point in the first minute but Carnaross found themselves in front five minutes later when John L McGee converted a penalty after being hauled down in the area. Kilmainham added another point but Carnaross extended their advantage with a point each from John L McGee and wing-back Peter Carpenter. However, Kilmainham went on to dominate the second-quarter and five points in a row gave them a two point lead. A late point from John L McGee narrowed the margin to a point giving Kilmainham a 0-7 to 1-3 lead at the break.
Kilmainham registered the first two points of the second-half before Dermot McGee replied with a point for Carnaross. However, by the time Carnaross registered their next point a rampant Kilmainham side had registered 2-5 as they completely dominated proceedings. It was one of those days for Carnaross who tried hard to get back into the game but nothing went in their favour as they missed several goal opportunities by the narrowest of margins. Patrick Nugent converted a free for Carnaross with five minutes remaining but their bad afternoon was compounded when Kilmainham added another 1-2 before the final whistle sounded.
