Carnaross 2-6 Curraha 0-18

Junior D Championship (Round 1)

Played in Rathkenny – 26/4/2015

Carnaross lost their opening game of the Junior D Championship against a Curraha side who produced a strong second-half display in a sunny Rathkenny.

Carnaross got off to the perfect start when Enda Gillic pounced on a cross from Colm McDonagh to fist to the net from close range in the second minute. Curraha hit back with two points but Carnaross continued their good start and added two more points from Paul Donoghue and Barry O’Connor. Curraha replied once more before Enda Gillic converted a point from play that Maurice Fitzgerald would have been proud of! Curraha went on to finish the half stronger adding five more points while Carnaross replied with points from Paul Donoghue and Colm McDonagh to trail by 1-5 to 0-9 at the break.

However, this was as close as Carnaross would get as Curraha stepped up their game after the restart. They went on to register eight points without reply as Carnaross were guilty of spurning the chances that came their way. They did register two late scores with Conor Kenny landing a point while Colm McDonagh found the net in the closing stages. Curraha added another point before the final whistle sounded.

Carnaross 2-13 Drumconrath 1-11

Junior D Championship (Round 2)

Played in Nobber – 3/5/2015

Carnaross picked up their first win of the Junior D Championship with an impressive display against Drumconrath.

Carnaross got off to a flying start with three points from the boot of Pierce Fleming to give them the early advantage. Drumconrath added a free before Carnaross doubled their account with the games opening goal from Cillian Comaskey in the eighth minute. Drumconrath reduced the margin with two points but Carnaross hit back with points from Colm Carpenter, John Plunkett and an excellent Colm McDonagh effort from a sideline ball. Carnaross could have been further ahead but were guilty of kicking five wides in a row and were punished when Drumconrath added the next three points to leave only a goal between the teams at the interval, with Carnaross leading 1-6 to 0-6.

Drumconrath made an instant impact after half-time with an early point followed by a goal as they took the lead for the first time. However, Carnaross settled quickly and Pierce Fleming converted two frees to give his side the lead once more. Drumconrath levelled once again but Carnaross responded with their second goal when Jack Yore fielded well and fired home from close range ten minutes in. Drumconrath fought back once again and three unanswered points left the sides level with ten minutes remaining. However, Carnaross took control for the remainder of the game and went on to hit five points in a row from Pierce Fleming (3), Colm McDonagh and John Plunkett for a fully deserved victory.

Carnaross 1-17 Clonard 2-10

Junior D Championship (Round 3)

Played in Athboy – 23/5/2015

A very impressive first-half display set Carnaross up for their second Junior D victory when they overcame Clonard in a sunny Athboy.

The start of the game was delayed as both sides had to wait half an hour for the arrival of the referee. When the action finally got underway it was Carnaross who made the early breakthrough with points from Colm Carpenter and Dean Connell (2). Clonard hit back and went on to take a three point lead when they registered 1-3 without reply. However, Carnaross regained their composure and went on to dominate the remainder of the half and quickly regained the lead with points from Dean Connell (2), Enda Gillic, Barry O’Connor and Paul Donoghue. Colm McDonogh found the net after twenty minutes and further points from McDonagh, Colm Carpenter (2), Enda Gillic and Dean Connell gave Carnaross a 1-13 to 1-4 interval lead with all but two of their scores coming from play.

Paul Donoghue hit the opening score of the second-half but it was Clonard who dominated the opening ten minutes and went on to register the next four points as Carnaross struggled to match the level of performance produced in the first-half. Both sides went on to exchange two points apiece with Colm McDonagh and Barry O’Connor hitting the target for Carnaross. Another point for O’Connor in the closing stages gave Carnaross a seven point lead going into added time but Clonard reduced the margin to four when they were awarded a penalty for a foul which appeared to have been committed well outside the area.

Prior to the game a minutes silence was observed for former Carnaross player Dick Connell who sadly passed away over the weekend. We extend our deepest sympathy to the Connell family. Ar dheis dé go raibh a anam.

Carnaross 1-6 Moynalty 3-7

Junior D Championship (Round 5)

Played in Carlanstown – 18/7/2015

A poor first-half from Carnaross left them with too much of a deficit to overcome against neighbours Moynalty.

Both sides exchanged points early on with Paul Donoghue hitting the target for Carnaross but Moynalty went on to take control of the game for the rest of the first-half. They registered 1-4 without reply and could have been further ahead but were guilty of hitting ten wides while Jack Yore also kept them out with a good save. When Barry O’Connor pointed in first-half stoppage time Moynalty held a 1-5 to 0-2 advantage.

Carnaross improved their performance considerably after the restart. Barry O’Connor pointed early but was then harshly dismissed for a second booking leaving Carnaross a man down with twenty five minutes to play. However, this setback did not deter them as they fought back strong and points from Liam Brogan and Paul Donoghue along with a goal from Niall McDonnell reduced the margin to a single point. The final fifteen minutes was keenly fought but crucially Moynalty got the scores late on to seal the win and advance to the quarter-finals.

Farrelly, Matthew O’Reilly, Aidan Lynch; Ciaran McDonagh, John Plunkett, Cian Yore; Colm Carpenter, Richard Mulvey (0-1); Colm McDonagh, Niall McDonnell (1-0), Enda Gillic; Dean Connell, Barry O’Connor (0-2), Paul Donoghue (0-2); Subs: Liam Brogan (0-1) for Enda Gillic;
