Minor Championship

Played in Dunganny – 8/3/2009

Carnaross competed in the Minor grade for the first time in over two decades on their own following a decision to split with neighbours Moynalty from the St. Ciaran’s amalgamation. However they made their exit at the first round when they faced Moynalvey, the team they beat in last years decider as St. Ciarans.

Moynalvey played with the aid of a stiff breeze in the first half and led at half-time by 2-6 to 1-2. Dean Connell scored the Carnaross goal after 20 minutes.Moynalvey stretched their lead to 10 points when they scored an early goal in the second-half. However Carnaross took control for the rest of the game.They scored two goals, one apiece from Niall McDonnell and Damien Smith to bring the Moynalvey lead down to 4 points. Further points from Charles Brogan and Niall McDonnell reduced the lead to 2 points. However time ran out for Carnaross and in the end they were beaten by two points.

Best for Carnaross were John Ward in goals, Ian Donoghue and Cian Gillic in defence, Stein Carpenter at midfield and Dean Connell and Niall McDonnell in attack.

Carnaross 3-6 Seneschalstown 0-9

Minor Shield

Played in Castletown – 22/3/2009

Despite a slow start Carnaross beat Seneschalstown in the Division 3 minor shield semi-final played in Castletown by six points. Seneschalstown got out of the blocks fast and with the aid of a stiff breeze raced into an early lead and led by 4 points to 1 after 15 minutes. However Niall McDonnell settled Carnaross’s nerves when he converted a penalty after he was hauled down in the penalty area. Seneschalstown scored another couple of points but just before the half-time whistle Niall McDonnell scored another goal to leave the half-time score 2-2 to 0-6 in favour of Carnaross.

Carnaross took control of the game in the second-half. Niall McDonnell scored his third goal of the game when his fifty went straight into the net. Damien Smith added a couple of points as well to increase the Carnaross lead to 7 points. Seneschalstown did not give up and but for some bad shooting could have got right back into the game. They reduced the lead to 5 points with time almost up. Damien Smith got the last score of the game following good play from Dean Connell. The final score 3-6 to 0-9 in favour of Carnaross.

Best for Carnaross were Charles Brogan, Cian Gillic and Peter Farrelly in defence, Cillian Comaskey and Stein Carpenter at midfield and Damien Smith and Niall McDonnell in attack.

Carnaross 1-14 Clann na nGael 1-8

Minor Shield Final

Played in Kells – 5/4/2009

Carnaross beat Clann na nGael in the Division 3 Minor shield final played in Kells by a margin of six points following an impressive team performance. Clann na nGael played with the aid of a stiff breeze in the first-half. However with Cillian Comaskey and Stein Carpenter controlling things at midfield Clann na nGael found it hard to come by scores. They got the first score of the game after 5 minutes but with points from Stein Carpenter, Charles Dillon and the excellent Damien Smith Carnaross led by one point at half-time 0-5 to 0-4. Niall McDonnell added a couple of quick scores just after half-time and with further points from Dean Connell, Damien Smith and Niall McDonnell again Carnaross led by 6 points with about 10 minutes to go. Damien Smith then scored a goal to put the game out of the reach of Clann na nGael. However they did not give up and scored a late goal to leave the final score 1-14 to 1-8.

Best for Carnaross were John Ward who made a couple of great saves in the second-half to deny Clann na nGael certain goals, Charles Brogan and Cian Gillic in the full back line, Shane Casserly and Peter Farrelly in the half back line, Cillian Comaskey and Stein Carpenter at midfield and Damien Smith, Dean Connell and Niall McDonnell in attack.

Carnaross 2-9 Clann na nGael 1-12

Niall McDonnell scored a late goal for Carnaross to snatch a draw in the first round of the Minor League against Clann Na nGael.

Carnaross started the game brightly and raced into an early 3 point lead with the points coming from Stein Carpenter and two from Niall McDonnell. However Clann Na nGael then scored a goal from a long shot which just dipped under the bar at the last moment. This seemed to give Clann Na nGael confidence and they then scored some wonderful points to lead at half-time by 1-5 to 0-4.

Once again Carnaross started the second-half in control and following a great goal from Dean Connell they reduced the Clann Na nGael lead to a single point. However they could not get the equaliser. Clann Na nGael scored a couple of points to go three points ahead again with time almost up. Then up popped Niall McDonnell to score the late goal following a long ball from Cillian Comaskey. Clann Na nGael had a late chance to get the winner but the ball went narrowly wide.

Best for Carnaross were John Ward in goals, Charles Brogan and Cian Gillic in defence, Stein Carpenter and Cillian Comaskey at midfield and Dean Connell, Damien Smith and Niall McDonnell in attack.

Dean Connell scored a late goal to complete a fantastic comeback for Carnaross who were six points behind with ten minutes remaining in the second round of the Minor League against Dunboyne.

Dunboyne started the game well and raced into an early lead with a couple of points from play. However Carnaross responded well and Damien Smith and Niall McDonnell replied with a couple of points. Once again Dunboyne took control of the game for the rest of the half and following a goal and more points from play they deservedly led at half-time by 1-8 to 0-5.

Carnaross began the second-half well and following four points without reply, two apiece from Niall McDonnell and Damien Smith, they cut the Dunboyne lead down to two points. Dunboyne then scored a goal from a penalty and added another point to lead by six points again with ten minutes remaining. Stein Carpenter then scored a great goal for Carnaross after he dispossessed the keeper. Niall McDonnell then leveled the match when he scored a goal from the penalty spot to set up a tense finish. Cillian Comaskey sent a long gall into the square which came back off the crossbar and Dean Connell was on hand to finish it to the net to leave Carnaross three point winners.

Best for Carnaross were Charles Brogan, Shane Casserly and Cian Gillic in defence, Stein Carpenter and Cillian Comaskey at midfield and Dean Connell, Damien Smith and Niall McDonnell in attack.

St. Colmcilles 1-11 Carnaross 4-10

Played in Piltown – 20/7/2009

Two early goals for Carnaross, one apiece for Charles Dillon and Peter Farrelly set Carnaross on the road to victory in the Minor League following the long trip to Piltown. However St Colmcilles fought back well from this early setback and following a succession of points they trailed by only two points at half time, 2-4 to 0-8.

Niall McDonnell and Dean Connell got two early points for Carnaross to stretch the lead to four points again but St. Colmcilles reduced the lead to the minimum when they scored a goal following a quick free. Carnaross refused to panic and increased their lead to four points again following two points from Damien Smith and one from Niall McDonnell. McDonnell then scored a great goal for Carnaross following good play from Peter Farrelly. Carnaross finished the game with two more points from Damien Smith and a late goal from Niall McDonnell finished the scoring.

Best for Carnaross were Stein Carpenter, Shane Casserly, Conor Peate and Cian Gillic in defence, Damien Smith at midfield and Dean Connell, Peter Farrelly and Niall McDonnell in attack.

Wolfe Tones 2-15 Carnaross 2-12

Played in Gibbstown – 27/7/2009

The Wolfe Tones managed to hang on to their lead following a late Carnaross comeback to win by three points in a high scoring game.

Carnaross started the game well but kicked a few early wides. In the middle part of the first-half the Wolfe Tones took control of the game and got some great scores from play including a goal. However Carnaross clawed their way back into the game and following some great scores from Niall McDonnell and Damien Smith they reduced the Wolfe Tones lead to five points 1-9 to 0-7 at half-time.

The Wolfe Tones got an early goal in the second-half to go eight points clear but Carnaross refused to give up and following a goal apiece from Charles Brogan and Cian Gillic they reduced the Tones lead to two points. However they could not get any closer and they swapped points until the end to leave the final score 2-15 to 2-12 in favour of the Tones.

Best for Carnaross were John Ward in goals, Cian Gillic and Charles Brogan in defence, Damien Smith at midfield and Dean Connell, Peter Farrelly and Niall McDonnell in attack.

Carnaross 0-15 Dunsany 0-11

Played in Carnaross – 17/8/2009

Carnaross managed to overcome a late Dunsany comeback to hang on to their lead following a high scoring game.

Carnaross started the game well and raced into an early lead following a succession of points from Niall McDonnell. At half-time they led by 0-9 to 0-1 with eight of the Carnaross points coming from the boot of Niall McDonnell while Damien Smith scored the other one.

The first 15 minutes of the second-half was evenly contested with both teams scoring in turn. However Carnaross seemed to tire as the game went on and Dunsany took control from then on as they attacked the Carnaross goal. However they could not get the goal that they needed and Carnaross held out for a four point victory.

Best for Carnaross were John Ward in goals who made a great save late in the game, Cian Gillic and Charles Brogan in defence, Stein Carpenter at midfield and Damien Smith, Paul Donoghue and the excellent Niall McDonnell in attack.
