JFC R2: Championship woes continue against Moynalty

Carnaross lost out narrowly to neighbours Moynalty in a fiercely contested second round clash in Pairc Tailteann.

Carnaross 1-11 Moynalty 0-15

Junior A Championship (Round 2)
Played in Pairc Tailteann – 14/4/2019

The Ross got off to a slow start and largely had themselves to blame as Paul Lynch punished their indiscipline with his accuracy from dead balls. Killian Porter got Carnaross off the mark with a point from after seizing on a short kick out. Carnaross then received a massive boost as Patrick McDermott found the back of the net from close range after Porter’s initial effort was blocked.

Carnaross finished out the half strongly with three points from Frank O’Reilly and a point each from Pierce Fleming and McDermott. Indiscipline continued to be a problem for them however as 7 of Moynalty’s 8 first half points came from placed balls.

Carnaross began to gain the upper hand after the break with points from O’Reilly, Dermot McGee and Porter pushing the lead out to 4 points. However, they were dealt a significant blow from which they never fully recovered with the sending off of Pierce Fleming.

Moynalty took full advantage of their extra man as they began to dominate midfield and created several overlaps. They gradually chipped away at the Carnaross lead and were denied a goal after a fine save by Shane McNiffe. But in the end, Carnaross were unable to hold on as Anthony Nevin won a cross field ball on the edge of the box before spinning and firing over with a last-minute point to take the bragging rights.

Carnaross’ second loss in the space of a week leaves them facing an uphill battle to qualify from the group.
