AFL R8: Carnaross claim both points in Meath Hill

Carnaross came away from Meath Hill with a hard-fought win after an entertaining tussle with the home side.

Carnaross 3-11 Meath Hill 1-13

A League (Division 2)
Played in Meath Hill – 5/5/2019

A minutes silence was observed before the game for Peter Farrelly and Tommy Fox of Carnaross who passed away during the week.

The visitors nearly got off to the perfect start after Decky Reilly raced through on goal only to be denied by the Meath Hill keeper. The home side opened the scoring with a pair of points but Carnaross found the back of the net at the second time of asking after Reilly intercepted a loose pass in the opposition defence before laying off to Dermot McGee for an easy finish. Meath Hill kept the scoreboard ticking over but Carnaross maintained their lead with points from McGee and Killian Porter (2).

A Frank O’Reilly free pushed the lead out to 3 points after Stephen Flattery forced a turnover with some excellent tackling but the home side gradually chipped away at the lead. They outscored the visitors by 6 points to 1 for the remainder of the half with the Carnaross point coming from Peter Carpenter who came on for the injured Cian Gillic.

Carnaross started strongly after the break and regained the lead with points from Reilly (2) and McGee but the tables turned once again when Meath Hill found the back of the net after a mix up in the Carnaross defence. It was clear that neither team was going to down without a fight and Carnaross responded with a decisive scoring burst.

Meath Hill struggled to contain Reilly throughout and the corner forward pounced on two close range goal chances in quick succession. The first came after some clever build up play from Niall McDonnell and O’Reilly before Cillian Comaskey knocked down a long ball into Reilly’s path for the second.

Meath Hill laid siege to the Carnaross rear guard in the final minutes in an effort to overturn the five point deficit but the defence held out and late points from McGee and Reilly secured an impressive win for the visitors on a scoreline of 3-11 to 1-13.
