Carnaross secured top spot in Group A of the Junior championship with a 6 point win over Moylagh on a chilly evening in the well-presented Millbrook venue.
Carnaross 1-14 Moylagh 1-8
Junior Championship (Round 5)
Played in Millbrook – 24/8/2018
Both sides took a while to get going as defences were well on top at the start of the match. Carnaross opened the scoring with a point from Dermot McGee which proved to be the only score of the opening ten minutes. Moylagh got off the mark shortly afterwards and had a bit of a purple patch, hitting the next three scores. Indeed, they could have scored a few more if not for some wayward shooting.
Carnaross battled back to regain parity but were dealt a setback when Moylagh raised the first green flag of the game with a chipped goal which crept over the line despite the best efforts of Sam Reynolds. The Ross, however, responded well and added the last two scores of the half to leave the sides tied heading into the break.
Carnaross performance levels improved in the second period as they began to open up a lead. They outscored Moylagh by 5 points to 2 in the opening 15 minutes and then landed the decisive blow when full forward John L McGee pounced on a ball into the box to fist to the back of the net. On the other end, the Carnaross defence limited Moylagh to a just a handful of chances.
Moylagh fought back at the end with a late pair of points but the outcome wasn’t in doubt as Carnaross held a 6 point lead at full time. It was a much improved second half performance from the Ross. They had an impressive spread of scorers with 8 players getting on the scoresheet including an impressive haul of 5 points from midfield duo Charles Brogan and Dermot McGee.
Carnaross now face the winners of the preliminary quarter final game between Dunsany and Wolfe Tones while Moylagh also advance to the knockouts.
